Zara launched its pre-owned clothing initiative in the U.S. on Tuesday. The program offers customers repair, resale and donation services, according to a press release sent to Fashion Dive.
The Inditex-owned fast fashion company previously launched the initiative in 16 markets across Europe, including in the U.K., Italy and France.
The repair service allows customers to request the repair of used Zara garments from any collection, per the release. The offering includes button and zipper replacement and seam repairs.
The program also includes a resale platform that allows customers to resell their used Zara items. Resale listings include Zara’s initial description of the item along with current images provided by the seller.
The donation service is available at all Zara stores across the U.S., and it accepts products from any brand. Items go to nonprofit organizations and are classified for reuse when possible, or recycled to support initiatives for vulnerable communities. The press release didn’t name which nonprofits were involved.
New York City-based customers can request in-home pickup for donated items when placing online orders.
Zara is positioning the U.S. launch of the program as a step toward creating a more environmentally efficient model. Two of the company’s main priorities in its sustainability efforts are using lower-impact materials by 2030 and transforming its supply chain, including supporting workers’ rights and improving biodiversity on 12 million acres of land.
The company said these initiatives will reduce its emissions by more than 50% by 2030. Its ultimate goal is to achieve neutral emissions by 2040 with at least a 90% reduction, per the company.
