Dive Insight:
Even as the larger luxury sector contracts amid global macroeconomic challenges, eyewear remains a resilient category, alongside jewelry and apparel, according to a recent report from Bain & Company.
The deal with Safilo Group follows a prior exclusive, long-term global agreement between Victoria Beckham and Marchon Eyewear for sun and optical eyewear, which was signed in 2018.
Safilo Group CEO Angelo Trocchia called Victoria Beckham one of fashion’s most iconic creative directors, and said in the release that the eyewear agreement would strengthen the brand’s position “as a global eyewear reference” for womenswear.
“This collaboration will further enhance the women’s portfolio within Safilo’s brand architecture and strengthen our presence in the luxury segment,” Trocchia added.
Safilo, which manufactures eyewear for nearly 30 luxury and premium brands including David Beckham, Boss, Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger, is benefiting from eyewear’s overall category strength. In its Q1 earnings report, the company posted a 3.1% year-over-year total sales increase to 285.8 million euros, or about $336.7 million. In its report, Safilo said David Beckham, Polaroid, Tommy Hilfiger, Carolina Herrera, Boss, Hugo and Marc Jacobs led brand performance for the company.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Safilo to take Victoria Beckham Eyewear to the next level,” Victoria Beckham, creative director of her namesake brand, said in the release. “Their expertise in the field is unparalleled, with a long-standing reputation for exceptional quality and craftsmanship. With their global reach and industry-leading capabilities, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead and can’t wait to bring our shared vision to life.”
Beckham, who was a musician in the 1990s-era band the Spice Girls, launched a line of sunglasses and denim in 2007 and debuted her luxury ready-to-wear line in 2008. Last year, the designer partnered with fast fashion retailer Mango on a capsule collection meant to coincide with Mango’s 40th anniversary celebration.
