Gap is selling a version of the white shirtdress custom designed for actor Anne Hathaway by Zac Posen, Gap Inc.’s newly appointed creative director.
Pre-sale for the limited-edition, ankle-length organic cotton poplin dress began at noon EST on Tuesday. The dress, which cost $158, was available in sizes 00 to 16, and sold out in under six hours. Orders will begin shipping in July, per a company press release sent to Fashion Dive.
Hathaway wore the dress at the Bulgari Aeterna High Jewelry Event in Rome last week, and the look went viral.
The style features short cap sleeves that can be worn off-the-shoulder, as shown in product imagery.
“Designing this custom white shirt dress was an exciting opportunity to reimagine Gap’s classic white shirt,” Posen said in the release. “By incorporating elements like the shirt’s collar and placket, and adding feminine touches with darting at the waist, we created a modern look that pays homage to the elegance of Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. It’s a connection of timeless style with contemporary fashion.”
The corset and the shorts Hathaway wore with the dress are not available.
Posen, who was named creative director of Gap Inc. and chief creative officer of Old Navy in February, also designed a custom Gap couture denim gown for Da’Vine Joy Randolph to wear at this year’s Met Gala.
Gap has launched two high-profile fashion collabs in 2024, including a 51-piece women’s and children’s collection with Dôen, released earlier this month, and a 55-piece capsule collection with streetwear brand Palace, which dropped in March.
A new collection of all-white summer apparel from Gap will be available beginning May 29, and features T-shirts, shirts, jeans, chinos, and dresses, per the release.
