Blumarine has appointed David Koma as creative director of Blumarine, according to a Wednesday statement on the LinkedIn page of operating company Blufin Group.
Koma studied fashion at Central Saint Martins College and launched his namesake line in 2009, according to his brand’s website. The line has consistently shown at London Fashion Week. Koma was previously creative director at Thierry Mugler, a role he held for nearly 4 years.
“Blumarine embodies a unique blend of sensuality, timeless glamour and elegance that I always admired, and it is an honour to be able to write the next chapter in the brand’s illustrious history,” Koma said in the LinkedIn statement. “I am excited to celebrate Blumarine’s rich creative heritage while infusing it with my own modern vision.”
Koma added that the brand’s “feminine aesthetic deeply resonates” with him and makes “this journey feel incredibly authentic.”
In the same statement, Blufin said Koma’s work is known for its “sculptural silhouettes and striking aesthetic” and that the designs have earned him “a prominent place in the contemporary fashion.”
“David Koma’s aesthetic captured me from the beginning,” Marco Marchi, director of Exelite, the holding company that owns Blufin, said in the LinkedIn statement. “I am sure that David will be able to interpret Blumarine’s codes to perfection, thanks to his vision and stylistic sensitivity, characterized by an overwhelming femininity.”
Pre-fall 2025 will be Koma’s first collection for Blumarine.
Koma’s predecessor, Walter Chiappoini, left his position in March following the presentation of his first collection for the house in February as part of Milan Fashion Week.
In a statement posted on Instagram at the time of his departure, Chiappoini said 2023 had been a “horrible year in which I had to say goodbye to three of the beings that I loved the most.” Chiapponi’s best friend, designer Davide Renne, died in November 2023 two weeks after taking on the creative director role at Moschino. Chiapponi’s dog and his 14-year-old nephew both died shortly after Renne.
